1 John 3:11-24

How is Christian love different from the love of the rest of the world? These verses teach us that Christian love is not self-serving but self-sacrificing, granting confidence before God, and the assurance of answered prayer. And this love is something we can never conjure up on our own apart from God in us.

Psalm 94 Communion

How should we respond to the martyrdom of saints, like missionaries Davy and Natalie Lloyd who were killed in Haiti? When evil against God’s people seems to go unchecked, how should the Christian respond? Psalm 94 teaches us that in face of affliction, when we can't see God’s hand, we must trust that we have His heart and that He will one day judge the wicked. 

1 John 2:28-3:10

If Jesus came back today, would you be embarrassed or ashamed by how you are living? In this passage, John reminds his readers that Christ came to destroy sin and is coming yet again. Therefore, Christians must be alert and living righteously, ready to receive Him unashamed of how they’ve lived. 

1 John 2:18-27

John tells us that division in the church should not be all that surprising to us because we're living in the final hour of history. Rather than be alarmed, we must hold the line and abide in Christ.

1 John 2:7-17

It’s easy to say Christians should love one another. It’s much harder to actually carry it out. That’s why John tells his readers that the command to love one another is rooted and grounded "in him", in Christ himself. Because it is only in Christ that we are able to actually love as God commands.

Bearing the Family Likeness - 1 John 1:5-2:6

Have you ever been told you act just like your parents or reminded how much you sound like your sibling? We all bear the family resemblance because we're shaped by them. In these verses, John explains that the family of God also has certain distinguishing marks that cause us to resemble our Father and one another.
