2 John

Love and truth are inseparable and essential for true Christian love and fellowship. In 2 John, we learn 5 important lessons about living in biblical Christian community.

2 Corinthians 3:7-4:6

In 2 Corinthians 3 and 4, Paul uses the metaphor of veiled and unveiled faces to help us comprehend the glory of God. To see this glory is to see Christ clearly because this vision is more than transforming human expectations or rule making.

1 John 5:6-12

Whether it’s your doctor, teachers, or other experts, you simply can’t go through life without trusting in the testimony of others. And yet many in the world refuse to trust the testimony of God. In these verses, John challenges his readers to take God at his word and trust the testimony he has given concerning His Son, Jesus Christ. And John warns us: to mistrust God and his Word is to call him a liar.

1 John 5:1-5

The Bible paints a bleak picture of the world as a place marked by people enslaved to sin and self-concern. If that's true, then what hope could we ever have of gaining victory over these forces that are ingrained so deeply in all of us? In chapter five of his first letter, John tells us how the Christian gains victory over the world: through faith, love, and obedience.

1 John 4:13-21

In his first letter, John was trying to put a hurting and divided church back together following a rift caused by false teachers. Part of his strategy throughout the letter was to enumerate various marks of authentic Christian faith compared to counterfeits. In chapter four, he continues with four things that are true of genuine Christians.

1 John 4:7-12

Love is the defining mark and highest command for the Christian, but what does love really mean and how do we practice it? God has demonstrated love perfectly in Christ Jesus. When our hearts are cold, the cure lies in a renewed reflection upon the cross. 

1 John 4:1-6

Parents often tell their kids, "Don't believe everything you hear,” because they recognize there is a certain amount of discernment that is good and prevents harm. It's no different in the church. Christians need to exercise discernment in what they listen to. Explore John’s two tests for Christian teachers and learn how to discern whose teaching you should follow.
