When thinking about church growth and evangelism, there are two ditches to avoid. The first is becoming a mile wide but only an inch deep—a shallow and superficial church with large numbers but little devotion to the Word. The other is becoming a mile deep but only an inch wide—a deep but disconnected church whose insular vision neglects the lost around them. Acts 8 gives us a better model for growing the church: obey the call of Christ to share the Gospel, point others to Him, and entrust the outcome to God.

If Jesus came back today, would you be embarrassed or ashamed by how you are living? In this passage, John reminds his readers that Christ came to destroy sin and is coming yet again. Therefore, Christians must be alert and living righteously, ready to receive Him unashamed of how they’ve lived.

John tells us that division in the church should not be all that surprising to us because we're living in the final hour of history. Rather than be alarmed, we must hold the line and abide in Christ.
